Why an orthodontic exam by age 7?<\/h2>\n
    \n
  • First permanent molars erupt at age 6-7<\/li>\n
  • By this age, it is important to evaluate the position of the teeth and the relationships of the upper and lower jaws<\/li>\n
  • Problems can be identified by this age, and explained to patients and their parents:\n
      \n
    • Protrusive teeth<\/li>\n
    • Dental crowding<\/li>\n
    • Lack of space for permanent teeth<\/li>\n
    • Narrow upper arch<\/li>\n
    • Crossbite<\/li>\n
    • Open Bite<\/li>\n
    • Facial asymmetry<\/li>\n
    • Oral habits (including thumb-sucking)<\/li>\n
    • Breathing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      The Canadian Association of Orthodontists (CAO) and the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommend that all children receive a first evaluation from an orthodontist by age 7.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t

      Why intervene and treat at an early age?<\/h2>\n
        \n
      • To minimize the severity of problems during growth and development<\/li>\n
      • To improve the position of the maxilla and\/or mandible<\/li>\n
      • To correct and improve the width of the maxilla<\/li>\n
      • To create space for permanent adult teeth (which are larger in size)<\/li>\n
      • To decrease the possibility of extractions in the future<\/li>\n
      • To treat problems with tooth eruption<\/li>\n
      • To regain space for eruption of permanent teeth<\/li>\n
      • To decrease the possibility of impacted or ectopic teeth<\/li>\n
      • To correct and monitor thumb-sucking habits<\/li>\n
      • To correct certain mouth-breathing problems<\/li>\n
      • To improve self-confidence and esthetics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Orthodontic treatment at an early age is certainly not required for all patients. However, such treatment may decrease the possibility of future orthodontic treatment, and will provide for a simpler and more efficient future treatment.<\/p>\n
