Orthodontics for children

Why an orthodontic exam by age 7?

  • First permanent molars erupt at age 6-7
  • By this age, it is important to evaluate the position of the teeth and the relationships of the upper and lower jaws
  • Problems can be identified by this age, and explained to patients and their parents:
    • Protrusive teeth
    • Dental crowding
    • Lack of space for permanent teeth
    • Narrow upper arch
    • Crossbite
    • Open Bite
    • Facial asymmetry
    • Oral habits (including thumb-sucking)
    • Breathing

The Canadian Association of Orthodontists (CAO) and the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommend that all children receive a first evaluation at an orthodontist by age 7.

Why intervene and treat at an early age?

  • To minimize the severity of problems during growth and development
  • To improve the position of the maxilla and/or mandible
  • To correct and improve the width of the maxilla
  • To create space for permanent adult teeth (which are larger in size)
  • To decrease the possibility of extractions in the future
  • To treat problems with tooth eruption
  • To regain space for eruption of permanent teeth
  • To decrease the possibility of impacted or ectopic teeth
  • To correct and monitor thumb-sucking habits
  • To correct certain mouth-breathing problems
  • To improve self-confidence and esthetics

Orthodontic treatment at an early age is certainly not required for all patients. However, such treatment may decrease the possibility of future orthodontic treatment, and will provide for a simpler and more efficient future treatment.

In the end, the result will be an optimal orthodontic experience and a beautiful smile.

Orthodontics for adolescents

Adolescent, also known as “teenaged”, years are a period of tremendous physical, emotional, and mental development. Body structures and tooth eruption experience growth spurts during puberty. Girls begin the adolescent phase at approximately 10 years of age and have maximal growth at 12 years of age. Boys enter the adolescent phase at 12 years of age and have their growth spurt at 14 years of age.

Adolescent and orthodontics

Adolescence is the ideal time to undergo the majority of orthodontic treatments. Orthodontists aim to treat many patients between the ages of 11 and 13 for 2 reasons: 1) the eruption of permanent teeth has completed (except for “wisdom” teeth) and 2) in many cases, growth can be very advantageous. In patients with discrepancies in the size or position of the jaws (maxilla or mandible), adolescence may be the ideal time to utilize growth to correct dental and skeletal problems. Orthodontic treatments that begin in early teenaged years are often simpler, faster, and may require fewer extractions of permanent teeth. An orthodontic exam and consultation at OrthoVille will help you determine when is the ideal time to begin orthodontic treatment.

Invisalign Teen

OrthoVille Orthodontics offers Invisalign Teen for certain patients. Invisalign Teen is the only orthodontic treatment with transparent aligners created specifically for teenagers. This technology uses special indicators to help teenagers cooperate with aligner wear. Invisalign Teen allows adolescents to maintain their active lifestyles and since they are removable, patients can brush and floss better.

Orthodontics for adults

Orthodontic treatment can be done at any age

In a healthy person, orthodontic treatment can be done at any age. Why not invest in yourself and proudly enjoy your smile?

Today, 25% of our orthodontic patients are adults. Orthodontic treatment is more accessible and tolerable today with comfortable and esthetic ceramic braces or transparent removable aligners (Invisalign). Adult orthodontic treatment can have profound effects on your appearance, self-esteem, and on the health and function of your teeth and occlusion.

Important points about orthodontic treatment for adults:

  • Many orthodontic problems can be treated just as easily in adults as in children (with healthy teeth, gums, and bone)
  • With modern dentistry and accessibility to health care providers, adults can aspire to keep their teeth their entire lives
  • Since adults have very minimal growth, if a problem exists between the size or position of the jaws, surgery may be required to obtain ideal relationships between the upper and lower teeth
  • Good communication with your family dentist and dental specialists plays an essential role in obtaining the best results
  • At OrthoVille, the use of mini-implants allows us to obtain results that were very difficult in the past
  • At the orthodontic exam and consultation appointment, patients will discuss their specific wishes and goals with Dr. Scalia

Particular treatment plans

Orthodontic treatment for adults may require particular treatment plans due to missing teeth, restored teeth, migrated teeth, and gum or bone (periodontal) disease. Following the consultation appointment, Dr. Scalia will communicate with your dentist to share the findings and treatment plan.

As an orthodontist, Dr. Scalia honestly wishes that your orthodontic experience is memorable and pleasant. Our team at OrthoVille will constantly support you and help you during your treatment. We are on a journey together, and we will never let you go!
